About This Project
Invertigo Dance Theatre is a Los Angeles–based contemporary dance company that creates work exploring social issues, human connection, and the space between movement and meaning. Toby composed the original score for this piece, building a sonic foundation that moves between atmospheric stillness and rhythmic urgency.
The composition layers acoustic instrumentation — saxophone, guitar, keys — with textured electronic production to mirror the choreography's shifts in tone. Quieter passages give the dancers room to breathe while percussive builds drive the more intense sequences. The goal was a score that felt like a partner to the movement rather than a backdrop behind it.
Working with dance requires a different approach to timing than film. Choreography isn't locked to a timeline the way a cut is — it breathes, stretches, and shifts in rehearsal. Toby worked closely with the choreographer through multiple iterations to find the right balance between structure and flexibility in the music.
